JURY - CAT 30 YEARS PRIZE, ABOUT

Paisagem abandonada,(Abandoned Landscape, [ft]) by Bartolomeu dos Santos

Casa das Artes de Tavira (CAT) has, since its beginning in 1985 worked towards supporting and creating conditions for young artists to show their work.
Considering that GAB-A, taking place between 18-19th April, is precisely targeted at promoting the dialogue between students from different artistic areas, CAT has created the “30 YEARS CASA das ARTES de TAVIRA” prize in this years program. More on the prize in the post  PRIZE CAT 30 YEARS (CASA das ARTES de TAVIRA 30 YEARSThe jury nominated for this selection are the artists David Evans, Margarida Palma and Samuel Rama. A brief biographical note on the jury members follows: 

David Evans

David Evans has been living in Portugal since 1966. As a painter he is self-taught , having taken part in many group and one man-shows. He was Director of Galeria Judite Dacruz at the beginning of the 70s. He was a teacher at the British Council and Director of English Studies for many years and is, at present,  a researcher at Universidade Nova in Lisbon and a translator.

Margarida Palma
Degree in Painting from the Faculdade de Belas Artes de Lisboa, completed her MA in Printmaking in Camberwell College of Arts (UK) in 2004, where she was awarded the Bartolomeu dos Santos and John Purcell awards. Completed a Film Studies Course, in Goldsmiths (UK), in 2006.
Worked as Professor Bartolomeu dos Santos assistant (1999 to 2003), in Camberwell College of Arts (2004 to 2007) and as a museum educator at CCB, Museu do Design and experimentadesign. Guest Lecturer at ESAD (2009 to 2013).
Founding member and Board member at Oficina Bartolomeu dos Santos, since 2012. With Soraya Vasconcelos, developed and produced Réplica - Reflections on Contemporary Printmaking, among other projects.
Her work integrates the Viewing Program of the Drawing Centre (USA) since 2011. In the same year she was an artist in residence at the Frans Masereel Centre (BE). Currently, she is developing her PhD Project, focused on drawing and printmaking practise. Exhibits regularly since 2004.

Samuel Rama

BA in Fine Arts at Escola Superior de Artes e Design das Caldas da Rainha where he was been a teacher since 2003. PhD in Visual Arts and Intermedia at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. Artist and teacher, divides his activity not only between sculpture and photography, but also constantly rethinks the complex story of the intertwined historical relation between these two media. Amongst his solo shows we can call attention to: Habitar a Penumbra (2005), Módulo - Centro Difusor de Arte, Oporto; MAGMA (2008), Galeria 111 - Lisbon e Oporto, SCANNING (2010) Arquivo Fotográfico de Lisboa, Lisbon; MEGAPARSECS (2012) Teatro da Politécnica, Lisbon. His group shows include: 7 Artistas ao 10.º mês (2005), Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon; London Pilot 2, London and Da Outra Margen do Atlântico - Alguns Exemplos do Vídeo e da Fotografia Portuguesa (From the Other Side of Atlantic – Some examples of Portuguese vídeo and photography) (2005), at the Hélio Oiticica Art Centre, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was a finalist for the prizes: IV International Expanded Painting Prize (2007), awarded by the Museo de Bellas Artes de Castellón, Spain; and X Mostra Internacional UNION FENOSA (2008), at the Museo de Arte Contemporâneo União Fenosa, Coruña, Spain.
